Supporting financial institutions and the GAF in implementing the “EIB Loans for SMEs” programme

The purpose of knowledge-sharing and co-operation includes the strengthening of the institutional capacities of the financial institutions in the area of agriculture and tourism finance, the improvement of their ability to assess environmental and climate risks of agricultural investments, and assistance to the programme's managing authority – the GAF – in monitoring activities and reporting to the EIB to ensure that sub-projects are implemented in accordance with EIB standards.

These activities focus on:

  • improving credit technology, policies and procedures
  • developing targeted loan products
  • optimising organisational structures
  • increasing lending efficiency
  • carrying out environmental and climate risk assessments
  • providing support in terms of MIS, procurement and compliance procedures
  • training and capacity-building
  • developing specialised lending and training manuals
  • marketing and promotion
  • monitoring EIB sub-loans.

Up to now, more than 600 bank staff from 17 financial institutions have benefited from different training measures, such as regular one- or two-day seminars and workshops as well as on-the-job training.
